Red Dust Cloud & Climate Art
The Red Dust Cloud series of paintings is a multi-layered response to the global effects of climate change. Once again I have used a palette reminiscent of colours used in Renaissance painting, yet pertinent to concerns, such as the widening desertification of Africa and the dust storms that have covered buildings and streets across much of Europe. My work also captures elemental phenomena, aspiring to a state of beauty in the tradition of Constable and Turner.
In developing this series of paintings, I was able to link both process and concept. Having prepared tinted solutions of heavily diluted paint, I begin by saturating the surface of the canvas with water, leaving certain areas dry. The fusion of pigment and water pooling on the surface helps to create the veils and skeins of delicately tinted colour, which expresses the sensations of light, vapour and mist seen in the cloud-skies above.
Captivating, chilling or enchanting, according to how the spectator envisions and responds to them.
